Children, Prayer, Teach

As I tucked Brynlee into bed, I asked, “Do you want Mimi to pray with you?”

My granddaughter hesitated at first, and then she said, “Mimi, you can pray.”  As soon as I finished my simple prayer, Brynlee said, “I can pray, too.”

“Okay,” I said as I closed my eyes waiting for her to pray.

Then I heard her little voice say, “No, Mimi.  You say it and then I will say it.”

On a particular day after watching Jesus pray, one of the disciples asked, “Lord, teach us to pray.”  Luke 11:1-13

Moms & dads, are you teaching your kids how to pray?  Your kids are watching you just like the disciples were watching Jesus. And you know they don’t miss a trick! So teach them how to do life with Jesus by talking to Him throughout the day.  Let them see you pray.

Maybe you don’t know how to pray. Start where you are.  Like the disciple, ask Jesus to teach you how to pray.

As moms and dads, we delight in giving good gifts to our children.  Our Heavenly Father delights even more in giving good gifts to us. So today, boldly ask your Heavenly Father to teach you how to pray.  And as you learn, teach the same things to the little ones that He has entrusted into your care.

On a side note, be ready to learn from your kids.  As I was praying and Brynlee was repeating after me, I evidently said something I had already said.  Brynlee stopped me and said, “Uh, Mimi, you already said that.”  Oh my!  I had to stop and ask myself, if I was praying thoughtfully or out of habit.

“Lord, teach us to pray.”

Faith, Loved Ones, Prayer

prayer-888757_640

I’ve been praying for my loved one for a very long time.  Sometimes I wonder if my prayer will ever be answered.  I get discouraged and lose heart.  And then I don’t pray with the same intensity.

Discouragement comes from faulty thinking that says “God isn’t answering my prayer”.

Faith thinking says:

  • God is love.
  • God is fully aware.
  • God is able.
  • God hears my prayer.
  • God is at work.
  • God’s ways are not my ways.
  • God draws people to Himself.

I take comfort in the fact that God loves my loved one even more than I do.  God understands the innermost thoughts and motives of my loved one.  God knows exactly how to draw my loved one to Himself.

I take comfort in the fact that God loves me even more than I do.  God understands the innermost thoughts and motives of my heart.  God knows exactly how to draw me to Himself.

So I will keep on praying, entrusting my deepest concerns to my faithful Father.

So I will keep on praying, taking the weight off me and giving it to the One who can handle it.

So I will keep on praying!  I will bring delight to my Father’s heart!  Proverbs 15:8

Calling All Moms and Grandmas! (Part 2)

How do we pass on our faith to our children and grandchildren?

As Moms and Grandmas, we want our children to be successful and have meaningful lives.  How do we define success?  How do we define a meaningful life?  1 Timothy 6:17-19 sheds some light on these very important questions. We take hold of real life when we store up treasure in heaven; when we live for things that are eternal; when we live for God and fulfill His unique purpose for our life.  Matthew 6:19-24

Passing on your faith is so important but it doesn’t depend entirely on you.  You can’t make your children believe.  But you can show them your faith in action.

First, nurture your own relationship with Jesus.  Kindle your own spiritual gift that God gave you when you believed in Him.  By doing so, your faith will remain alive and vibrant.  And your children will see you live out your faith day by day.  This is more powerful than anything you will ever say!

Second, teach your child the Word of God as you go about your day.  Watch for opportunities to share truths about God in a very natural but purposeful way.  Be diligent!

Third, pray for each one of your children.  Pray that they will be receptive to the truth of God’s Word.  Remember you can teach them, but ONLY God can reach them.

file000507447844Let me encourage you, dear Mom or Grandma, if you have a child or grandchild that has not embraced the idea of faith alone in Christ alone for salvation.  Don’t give up! Keep on loving them unconditionally.  Don’t be a preaching mom, cramming the truth down their throat.  Instead, be a loving praying mom. Pray for special opportunities to share what God is doing in your life. Trust God to reach them!

I’m Sick of Praying About This

Are you in a situation that requires prayer but you just don’t know how to pray about it?  Or maybe you’ve been praying about something so long, you just don’t have anything else to say.  That’s okay.

Take comfort knowing that the Holy Spirit is praying right along beside you.  He intercedes for you with groanings too deep for words.  He intercedes for you according to the will of God. And if that isn’t enough, Christ Jesus is also interceding for you at the right hand of God.  Romans 8:26-27, 34

Rest, knowing God hears all our prayers.  Rest, knowing you don’t have to have all the answers. Rest, knowing God will cause all things to work together for good, even if you fall short.  Rest, knowing God will use these times to conform you to the image of His Son. Rest, knowing God is for you and will freely give you what is best. Rest, knowing nothing will ever separate you from His love.  Romans 8:28-39

Rest, He’s got it!

Watch and See

I’m excited because the 2015 calendar I ordered on amazon is suppose to arrive today.  My calendar helps me plan my day. But a calendar is not enough.

King David realized there was something far more important than a calendar.

In the morning, O Lord, You will hear my voice; In the morning I will order my prayer to You and eagerly watch.  Psalm 5:3

I love this verse! I see a man eager to talk to God.  I see a humble man praying out of a heart felt need, not out of obligation. I see a man who truly believes God hears him. I see a man who believes God is working on his behalf.  I see a man watching to see what God is going to do each and every day.

Planning is important. Praying is even more important.

Praying reminds us that our plans are part of God’s bigger plan. And His plan is for every man, woman, boy and girl to have a vibrant relationship with Him. Praying enables us to spot God-given opportunities that He brings our way, opportunities to share Him with those around us.

How exciting and how wonderful it is to be part of His plan!
