Dark gut-wrenching times leave you feeling defeated and alone.  Doubts creep in and cause you to question things you never thought you would question.  I know.  I’ve been there.

Jesus’ crucifixion left the disciples feeling defeated and alone.  They had doubts.  Yet they worshiped Jesus when they saw Him.

When you have doubts, don’t run from Jesus.  Run to Jesus.  Worship Him by presenting  yourself to Him, doubts and all.  Let Him speak truth to your doubts.

Jesus spoke truth to the disciples’ doubts. He reassured them of two fundamental things:

  1.  All authority is Mine in heaven and on earth. (I am in control. You are not defeated.)
  2. I am with you always, even to the end of the age. (You are not alone.)

If you’re in a dark doubting place today, believe again that God is in control and that He is with you. Then move forward and do the work God has called you to do.  Matthew 28:16-20

How Dare You Call Me Lazy!

I don’t think of myself as lazy. So when I was reading a parable in Matthew this morning, I was struck by the master’s response to the slave who had buried his talent. The master said, “You wicked, lazy slave…”  Matthew 25:26

What was the slave’s excuse for not using the master’s talent?

He said, “I was afraid… ”

I am afraid, too – afraid to go all in, afraid of failure, afraid to pursue my God-given dream of full-time women’s ministry, afraid to boldly pursue speaking opportunities.

Fear paralyzes.  Fear causes us to do nothing. Fear leads to laziness.

So how do we address this fear?  We do something!  Something is better than nothing!

Paul told Timothy to get busy- to be disciplined and use his gift.  In so doing, he would demonstrate that the spirit from God is one of power, love and discipline.  2 Timothy 1:6-7

So today I choose to go all in.  Today I choose to be disciplined and do the work.  I want to hear the Master say to me, “Well done, good and faithful servant.”

How about you?  Where do you need to exercise discipline over fear?

Impossible Dream of a Nobody

Faith, Hope

I feel like it’s an impossible dream –  for lots of reasons.

  • I am not remarkable.
  • I am too old.
  • I don’t have anything unique to offer.
  • I don’t have the right connections.

Yet, the Lord’s small quiet voice is relentless.

“Dale, you know what I want you to do because I have placed a deep desire in your heart to do it.  And that desire is only growing stronger with time. So why aren’t you doing it?”

I humbly answer, “Lord, if I’m honest with myself and with you, I have to admit that I don’t really believe you can use me this way.”

Do you have doubts, too, that God can use you to accomplish His purposes?  We must come to realize that it is about God’s purpose for us. It is about God’s enabling power.  We bring what we have to Him and allow Him to work with us and for us to accomplish His purpose.

When Gabriel spoke to Mary about God’s plan for her to become the mother of the Son of the Most High, Mary was perplexed and asked,

“How can this be, since I am a virgin?”Luke 1:34

Gabriel said, “For nothing will be impossible with God.” Luke 1:37

Mary believed and said, “Behold, the bondslave of the Lord; may it be done to me according to your word.”   Luke 1:38

Elizabeth said of Mary, “Blessed is she who believed that there would be a fulfillment of what had been spoken to her by the Lord.”  Luke 1:45

That dream you have – the one you believe is from God – is not impossible. You may have questions and wonder how it will ever happen.  But if you take God at His word and step out in faith, He will accomplish His purpose in you, for you, and through you.

Envy is Killing Me!

Envy, Faith

For Pilate knew that because of envy the chief priests and elders had handed Jesus over. Matthew 27:18

  • Envious people plot to destroy others – Matthew 27:1
  • Envious people twist and bend the truth – Matthew 26:61-66
  • Envious people are accusatory – Matthew 27:11-14
  • Envious people make bad choices – Matthew 27:21
  • Envious people do not listen to the voice of reason – Matthew 27:23

For where Jealousy and selfish ambition exist, there is disorder and every evil thing. James 3:16

Envy is evil.  Envy wants what someone else has.  Envy is earthly, natural, demonic. James 3:13-15

file000960758464

With a burning desire to speak to women about the things God has laid on my heart, I often find myself battling envy.  I see others doing what I want to do -speaking to women and having impact for God – and if I’m not alert, envy quickly fills my heart, followed by discouragement and doubt.  Envy is destructive.

Envy must be dealt with quickly.  James 4 and I Peter 2 tell us how to deal with envy. Envy must be put aside quickly.  Have nothing to do with it!  Get rid of it!

  1. Admit that you are envious.
  2. Agree with God that envy is evil.
  3. Humble yourself before your God.
  4. Surrender your selfish-ambition.
  5. Thank God for His plan for you.
  6. Thank God for His plan for others.
  7. Ask God for His help in this area.

God gives grace to the humble.  James 4:6

Envy erupts so easily within us. We can even envy things that are wonderful in and of themselves. Our eyes look at others and we want what they have and we want it now! This is another reason we must keep our eyes on Jesus.  He will give us what He wants us to have and He will give it to us when He wants us to have it.  Can we trust that He knows best?

The Best Thing I Can Say About Myself

The best thing I can say about myself is, “I’m learning to trust God today.”

Every day is a faith walk!  This is how God intends it to be.

If you’re like me, you may find yourself longing for just one day without concerns, difficulties and struggles.  This day will come but not until we see Jesus face to face.

Difficulties encourage us to fix our eyes on Jesus instead of trying to do life without Him.  It is for this very personal relationship that Jesus died.

What do we know about faith?

  • Our relationship with God begins with faith – faith in Christ alone.
  • Our relationship with God continues and grows by faith – faith in Christ alone.
  • Faith pleases God.
  • Faith is a fight – a good fight.

Jesus is the author and perfecter of faith.  He walked by faith when He endured the cross for us, giving us an example of faith in action.  He kept His eyes on His Heavenly Father. Hebrews 12:2

Are you facing a difficult situation today? Is someone you love in trouble? Are you in the midst of change?  Are you feeling anxious?  Are you afraid?

Fix your eyes on Jesus! He is willing and eager to help you. Put your faith in Him – not in your own strength, not in your circumstances, not in your bank accounts, not in other people – but in Him alone. Fight the good fight of faith!

I am fighting the good fight of faith.

  • I have walked away from my career as a CPA to follow God’s call on my life.
  • I am trusting God to guide me.
  • I am trusting God to provide opportunities of service.
  • I am trusting God with my future.
  • I am fixing my eyes on Him.

O My Soul!

Despair, Disturbed, Faith, Hope

“Why? Why?”, asks David.

“Why are you in despair, O my soul?  And why have you become disturbed within me?”  Psalm 42:5

Have you ever started out a day feeling great but ended it feeling miserable?  What causes your soul to become disturbed?  What causes you to despair?

If you can determine the source of your despair, you can find a great and magnificent promise in the Word of God that will help restore your hope in God. If you can determine why you are disturbed, you can find grace and peace.

“Grace and peace be multiplied to you in the knowledge of God and of Jesus our Lord; seeing that His divine power has granted to us everything pertaining to life and godliness through the true knowledge of Him who called us by HIs own glory and excellence.  For by these He has granted to us His precious and magnificent promises.” 2 Peter 1:2-4

When we are in despair and our soul is disturbed, we thirst for God.  When tears are present day and night, our soul pants for the living God with more intensity than it does when everything is going smoothly.  Psalm 42:1-3

The awesome truth is that God wants us even more than we want Him. He wants us to share our burdens with Him.  He wants us to come to Him for help.  He wants us to realize how vital He is to our everyday life.   He wants to be the very God of our life.  Psalm 42:8

Do you see the beauty in this?  Can you look beyond your despair to see the One who wants to walk with you and hold your hand through all of life’s difficulties?

Reach out to Him!  Hope in God once again!  Praise Him for the help of his presence!  Psalm 42:5

None of Your Business!

Faith, Future, Timing

Sometimes I just want to know when it’s going to happen!  ‘It’ can be many things. The believers in Acts were just like me.  They asked Jesus when He was going to set up His kingdom.  Jesus replied, (paraphrased by me), “None of your business! BUT you do have plenty of business to tend to.  So get going!”

I spend too much time thinking about the future.  My time would be much better spent doing something that is useful NOW.  Timing is God’s business, not mine. Jesus said, “It is not for you to know times or epochs which the Father has fixed by His own authority.”  Acts 1:6-8

I am more convinced today, than ever, that God has a plan for my life.  I don’t need to know the timing of everything.  As a matter of fact, I’m better off not knowing.  I know what I need to know.  Jesus has a job for me to do.  His Holy Spirit dwells within me giving me the ability to do what He has called me to do. He has given me the same job He gave the believers in Acts.  I am to be His witness wherever I am today and whatever I am doing today.

Timing is God’s business.  Even Jesus’ birth, death, burial and resurrection was a predetermined plan of God the Father, carried out at the perfect time.  Acts 2:23

file000786402730

So today, let’s mind our own business!  Let’s be busy sharing the wonderful news of God’s grace and love for each and every one of us.  And when tempted to figure out the timing of events, whisper to the Father, “I trust you with this.  I know you will bring it to pass according to your plan.”

Run For Cover!

We’re in a fierce raging battle – a spiritual battle!  Sometimes we’re fully aware of it and sometimes we’re oblivious. Yet it rages on!

King David’s spiritual battle involved real physical enemies that were trying to kill him. He was surrounded, confronted, terrified and distressed. He felt like death was imminent. But he knew what to do. He ran for cover!

  • He cried out to God for help!

In my distress I called upon the Lord, and cried to my God for help; He heard my voice out of His temple, And my cry for help before Him came into His ears.  Psalm 18:6

  • He kept God’s Word front and center!

The Lord my God illumines my darkness.  Psalm 18:28

Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path.  Psalm 119:105

I believe God sometimes allows our battle to become fierce so we will learn to trust Him in new says.  We learn some very important things in the midst of the battle.  We learn:

  • God is upholding me.
  • God is training me and teaching me.
  • God is gentle with me.
  • God is enabling me.
  • God is girding me with strength.
  • God is keeping me from slipping and falling.
  • God is working out His plan and purpose for me.

file000788921845

As a young girl, I remember running to my grandmother’s lap for cover.  It felt safe there.  I also remember being told by another family member that I was getting too big to sit on my grandmother’s lap.  I remember feeling sad about that.

Aren’t you glad we never get too big for God’s lap?

Run to Him for cover!  Run ashamedly!

You will say, like David in Psalm 18:1-2,

I love you, O Lord, my strength.  My God, my rock, in whom I take refuge.

Change is Scary!

Change, Faith, Fear

Change is scary! Change is confusing!  Change creates anxiety, fear and doubt! And for these very reasons, change is a wonderful opportunity!

  • Change is an opportunity to go running to your Heavenly Father for comfort.
  • Change is an opportunity for increased clarity about God’s purpose for your life.
  • Change is an opportunity for your faith to become stronger and purer.

My life calling is undergoing radical change. Following the Lord’s leading, I am transitioning from being a full time CPA to being in ministry full time.  The transition is messy.  Sometimes I’m scared to death. Sometimes I’m confused. Sometimes I’m full of anxiety, fear and doubt.  Questions abound.

  • Is this realPA281186ly what God wants?
  • What about money?  Will God really provide?
  • Can God really use me?
  • What will really happen when I step out?
  • Will there be any opportunities to speak?
  • How do I move from where I am now to where I believe God wants me to be?

I am learning to take one step at a time and to trust that my Heavenly Father knows what is best for me. When I run to Him, He comforts me and reassures me that I am not in this alone.  It is His plan for me.  I can trust Him.  He never changes!

Are things in your life in upheaval?  Are you feeling confused and anxious? Seize the opportunity to run to your Heavenly Father.  Let Him lead you.

Casting all your anxiety on Him because He cares for you.  I Peter 5:7

The Lord is near. Be anxious for nothing, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God.  And the peace of God which surpasses all comprehension, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.  Philippians 4:5b-7

In Hope Against Hope

Faith, Hope

What are you hoping for?  Does it seem utterly hopeless? Is your faith wavering?

2013-01-28_09-16-34_256Abraham was 100 years old.  Sarah was 90 years old.  They were way too old to have a baby.  Yet God had promised them a baby.

If you know the story of Abraham and Sarah, you know they both struggled with God’s promise of a child.  As a matter of fact, they both laughed about it.  It seemed so ridiculous.  They even tried to fix the situation by coming up with a plan of their own which miserably failed.  And every day as they grew older, the impossibility grew bolder.

In hope against hope he (Abraham) believed… Without becoming weak in faith he contemplated his own body, now as good as dead since he was about a 100 years old and the deadness of Sarah’s womb; yet with respect to the promise of God, he did not waver in unbelief, but grew strong in faith, giving glory to God, and being fully assured that what God had promised, He was able also to perform.  Romans 4:18-21

I love this verse.  It does not condemn Abraham.  Instead it points out that even though Abraham’s body was growing weaker, his faith was growing stronger.

When our situation looks bleak, our faith can grow weak.  If we want our faith to grow stronger, we need to look beyond our situation to the Faithful One. Everything we hope for may not happen.  But we have the promise that God is for us and nothing can separate us from His love.  We have the promise that He is working all things for our good. Romans 8

Exult in hope. Exult in tribulations. Exult in God!

Hope does not disappoint because the love of God is poured out within our hearts. Romans 5:5
